How American Cancer Society got their time back with outsourced payroll services
For years, chronic overtime was simply part of the job for the American Cancer Society’s payroll team. Certain days were completely blocked off, with no time off allowed — no exceptions. Year-end was its own ordeal. That was the reality before outsourced payroll services with OneSource Virtual (OSV) changed how the team operates day to day.
Tina Thompson, the American Cancer Society’s payroll manager, shares what that shift looked like from the inside. The American Cancer Society went live with both Workday payroll and OSV simultaneously on Christmas Eve 2023, a bold go-live date that could have made an already demanding implementation even more difficult. Instead, OSV’s incremental approach and in-tenant delivery made the experience feel less like onboarding a new vendor and more like adding an extension of their own team.
Mandatory overtime is gone. Payroll processing days that once required all-hands-on-deck now run smoothly even when someone needs to step out. Garnishment administration is handled efficiently, with documentation loaded directly into Workday so everything is accessible when needed. Payroll tax compliance, historically a source of stress and reactive problem-solving became a proactive process with a dedicated tax manager conducting regular audits and quarterly check-ins. Most importantly, the team got back something no payroll provider can put a price on. As Tina puts it, they now have "time with our family that we should have had all along."
