How Whataburger Kept Payroll Tax on Track with OneSource Virtual
When it comes to payroll tax and other critical back-office functions, the work doesn't stop just because you're short-staffed. For a year, Whataburger had to move their payroll tax work over to the corporate tax team because they didn't have anyone in-house to handle it. But as anyone in finance or accounting knows, corporate tax is the wrong home for payroll tax. It runs on different skills and a different timeline. Whataburger didn't miss a beat, though, because they had the payroll tax team at OneSource Virtual (OSV) in their corner.
With named specialists to help prepare federal, state, and local filings and make deposits on schedule, the work didn't hinge fully on Whataburger having someone in the right seat internally. The filing calendar kept moving regardless, and Whataburger stayed compliant throughout.
“That relationship was really huge in being able to successfully get through that period and that transition,” says Carl York, group director of HR Shared Services for Whataburger.
What does good look like in a service provider?
When Carl joined the popular fast-food chain, all that payroll tax work moved back under payroll, where it belongs. Since then, he’s seen that same reliability firsthand. While other vendor experiences have meant inconsistent communication, repeated questions, and constant follow-up to get answers, OSV has been different.
"Things are more proactive, and definitely it's a tighter relationship," Carl says. "If I'm having issues or if I have questions, I don't have to just open a ticket. I can pick up the phone."
Watch Carl explain why partnership and communication matter in a vendor relationship.
